Compare Between Mental and Physical Impairment in Social Situation and Burden of Caregiver

Abstract

|
In Korea, Law for Welfare of Impairments classifies impairment in 6 categories and supports impairments by their severity. And there has been arguing between impaired persons and experts for fairness of evaluation. But there are no scales which can compare mental and non-mental impairments. So we try to measure impairments by indirect methods which evaluate social situation and burden of caregivers. We choose moderate to severe impairments who classified as category 2 and 3 by Law of welfare. They are estimated 60 to 84% of impaired rates. We evaluate social characteristics and use Instrumental Activity of Daily Living, and Attitude toward Occupation for impairments and use WHO Quality of Life and Burden Interview for measure caregiver’s burden. As a result mental impairments suffer more in social context like job opportunity, family income and marriage. Though caregiver’s scales show roughly same results but in case of caregivers of mental impairments suffer more psychiatric stress like self-perceived health, tension and anger due to patients. We need further study on those areas. And mental impairments need more systemic social support for their living.
